Confessions of a Legging-Wearing, Slightly Too Honest Parent

So when I plan to write my blogs, I like to give you a little bit of personal and a bit of business. I like to ask ChatGPT what is trending and for recommendations on what to write — but to be honest with you, it doesn’t really help me. I’m beginning to think I’m not trendy at all.

Those of you who know me, and especially the ones that see me on the school run most mornings, probably already know this about me. I am very much the one who looks like she hasn’t slept, lives in leggings and a jumper, possibly covered in mud, slobber, or snot, and whose hair hasn’t even made it into a bun yet because I’m still trying (and failing) to rock the preppy messy hair look.

Picture me sprinting after a rogue toddler across the car park, wishing I had a coffee in hand, and trying not to fall over my own feet… yep, that’s basically me most mornings.

So, the recommendation from ChatGPT was for me to tell you about snack prep.

WELL, ChatGPT needs to go and have three children and then get back to me about snack prep. I’m struggling to prep a meal at the moment, let alone snacks. And yes, you guessed it: the meal planning each week has not worked for a while. I forget to check out on the food shop, then we end up with nothing in the cupboards, and I panic-buy things that may or may not form a coherent meal. I can’t be the only one, can I?

Oh, and while I’m talking about New Year’s resolutions — the exercise this year has not happened yet, unless you can count:

  • Running across a car park after an absconding toddler, OR

  • Doing my toddler’s ballet class because she thinks lying on the floor screaming warrants a sticker at the end, meanwhile I’m excessively focused on foot positioning and making sure my skips and gallops are in the correct direction.

Anyway, I suppose I should mention some work…

Work Wins: Toy Rotation & Playtime Pioneers

What I think I’ve been smashing recently is toy rotation — and yes, that is mainly thanks to the Playtime Pioneers scene setter kits. These little kits are a game-changer. Not only are they super fun and imaginative for the kids, but they also save so much space. Everything folds flat and packs neatly into one box, so I can pull them out for playtime and actually get my living room back in the evening — rather than stepping over a mountain of toys and feeling like I live in a toy shop that’s been hit by a tornado.

The best part? Rotating the kits keeps play exciting without adding more clutter. One day it’s Mini Menders, the next it’s Little Wings Airport, and suddenly the toys feel “new” again. The kids are engaged, imaginative, and entertained, and I get those few golden minutes to breathe — or drink my coffee while it’s still hot, ok luke warm (I am not a miracle worker).

And at the end of the day you get rewarded again as you are not having to pick up toys from everywhere after completing the bedtime routine.

Even on the chaos-filled days with mud, snacks, and absconding toddlers, toy rotation with Playtime Pioneers means playtime is organised, creative, and manageable — and my home isn’t completely taken over by toys by bedtime.

So yes, my hair might still be a mess, leggings might be sticky, snacks might be last-minute, and exercise may involve chasing toddlers… but Playtime Pioneers helps keep a little magic alive in the chaos. And for now, that feels like a win.
